Catania Fontanarossa International Airport (CTA)
Airport Information
(Fontanarossa, Catania, Italy)
Conveniently located just 5 km / 3 miles south of the city centre, the Cantania Fontanarossa International Airport (CTA) is the main gateway to the east coast of Sicily. The facility's single terminal handles in excess of 5.5 million domestic and international passengers every year, making Cantania Airport the region's second-busiest airport and Italy's fourth.
Major airlines such as British Airways, Air France and Lufthansa offer services here and connect numerous European destinations such as Munich, Paris and Amsterdam, while domestic airlines offer extensive flights to many of the regions major destinations. The current 'investment programme' has ensured that Catania Fontanarossa Airport continues to look forward and plan for growth over the next ten years, implementing a whole new infrastructure and making many additions, including a panoramic restaurant, a new airside runway and further office space.

Catania Fontanarossa International Airport (CTA) Information: History and Facilities
Catania Airport has an interesting history and dates back to 1924, when it was the region's very first airport. However, by the 1940s, it was clear that the airport was fast running out of space and it was deemed necessary to relocate and in 1950, the new bigger and improved Catania Airport opened for business.
After 20 years of unexpected growth and high passengers levels, in 1981 it was once again necessary to restructure the airport to cope with demand. More recently in 2007, a swanky new terminal building was inaugurated and after further expansions, it is hoped that Catania Fontanarossa International Airport will be able to enjoy continuing success.
Facilities at Catania Fontanarossa International Airport include a shopping centre on the first floor with five island areas, selling a range of souvenirs and travel goods, along with a self-service café and several smaller coffee shops. Particularly popular is the elevated, modern restaurant at the top of a tall tower, a new addition to the dining scene at Catania Airport, which offers panoramic views of the airport and the runways. For a small charge, business passengers can take advantage of the airport's Alitalia Bellini VIP Lounge.
